birthday post

last month was my 39th birthday. i did't feel any particular urge to celebrate it, so instead i want to celebrate my wife.

dear wife, you have been the greatest partner, parent, lover, co-conspirator, adventurer, and cook. i am blessed beyond belief that you found me and chose me, that you have stuck with me all these years, that we've built a life together, and that every day i get to wake up next to you.

the wedding speech "the blessings of the hands" comes to mind frequently for me, as we round the corner on 10 years together, more impactful now than it could have when we wed. to badly quote it from memory:

"these are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you. these are the hands that work alongside you to build a life. these are the hands that will bear and birth and comfort your children with you. these are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. these are the hands that wrinkle with age and will always be reaching for you."

i think about that every time we hold hands, or we hug, or you carry one of our kids. i love you.
